Prvá zmienka o osade je z roku 1251. V mestskej časti Matejovce môžete obdivovať renesančnú zvonicu zo 17. storočia a kostol sv. Štefana. Priemysel sa v mestečku začal rozvíjať v dielňach nemeckých kolonistov. Z jednoduchých dielní z polovice 19. storočia vznikla začiatkom 20. storočia priemyselná výroba smaltovaných výrobkov, poľnohospodárskych potrieb a železiarskeho tovaru v jednej z najväčších továrni na Slovensku. Dnešný moderný závod na výrobu práčok a iných elektrospotrebičov je významným zamestnávateľom ľudí v regióne. Mestská časť situovaná na severovýchodnom okraji Popradu má asi 2900 obyvateľov.
